Beach-Ready Bodies: 5 Tips to Tone Up for Warmer Weather

Punxsutawney Phil may have predicted more winter weather back in February, but we’re way past six extra weeks of snow and well on the way to warmer weather. This means you’ll soon be shedding long layers in favor of breezy tees and showy shorts that expose your total lack of diet and exercise over the last few months.

If you’re dreading the switch to warm-weather duds, it’s time to start toning up in preparation for long days spent lounging poolside or hitting up the beach. Here are five great ways to get your regimen underway and tone up in time to enjoy sunny days in a swimsuit instead of sweatpants.

Be mindful about the calories you drink

It can be tempting to order that venti, whipped cream-topped frappuccino just dripping with beads of condensation. When it comes to drinks, it can be especially easy to slurp up excess calories and sugars without a second thought.

While it can be tricky to find a refreshing beverage on the go, opting for a low-cal drink can help you to keep toned and trim.

Pair cardio and resistance training

Everyone knows cardio is an important part of any weight loss regimen, not to mention it’s great for your heart, your lungs, and your life, in general. When you add in weight or resistance training, as well, you improve your ability to tone your body while burning fat, and unless you’re trying really hard, you’re not going to get bulky.

Remember that variety is key

Over time, our bodies adapt to activity, which is why it’s so important to switch up your exercise routine frequently if you want to continue generating results. Feeling good about running? Add in swimming, or mix up your routine with yoga, Pilates, or a step class. Throw in some body work for good measure. You’ll keep challenging your body and maintain engagement and motivation.

Tone your body: exercise early

Exercising at any time of day is beneficial, but there are a few good reasons to schedule a sweat session first thing in the A.M. For starters, you’ll get a major energy boost to start your day, as well as calorie-burning power that peaks an hour after your workout and lingers all day. Plus, you know you’ll have time, unlike later in the day, when unexpected obligations or fatigue could derail the best-laid plans.

Switch up your diet

Cold weather and layers of clothing that offer a lot of coverage can convince you to stray from a healthy diet and lean hard into comfort food. When you want to get beach body ready, it’s time to curb the all-carb diet and focus on incorporating healthy whole foods like lean meat, whole grains, and fruits and veggies that make you feel great and give you the energy to tackle your new workout regimen.
